Be part of a new and growing asset management company
ABOUT MASTERCARD FOUNDATION ASSET MANAGEMENT
Established in 2023, the Mastercard Foundation Asset Management (MFAM) Corporation was created to build a diversified investment portfolio for the Mastercard Foundation, one of the largest public foundations in the world. MFAM is headquartered in Toronto, Canada. We have a global investment strategy and mandate to deliver long term returns that will fund the philanthropic mission of the Mastercard Foundation and its partners in Africa and Canada.
We believe in the mission and values of the Mastercard Foundation and aim to cultivate an ecosystem of exceptional people, trusted partnerships, and long-term investments to achieve lasting impact. We value bold ideas, curiosity, and tenacity, as part of nimble, creative, and meritocracy-based team.
ABOUT MASTERCARD FOUNDATION
Mastercard Foundation, one of the largest foundations in the world, works with visionary organizations to advance education and financial inclusion to enable young people in Africa and Indigenous youth in Canada to access dignified and fulfilling work. Established in 2006 through the generosity of Mastercard when it became a public company, the Mastercard Foundation is an independent organization separate from Mastercard. The Foundation has offices in Toronto, Kigali, Accra, Nairobi, Kampala, Lagos, Dakar, and Addis Ababa.
WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH
You will report to the Head, Data & AI, working closely with them and the broader technology team to design, build and deliver solutions that power MFAM’s investment and operational capabilities. You will also interact with external vendors, data providers, and technology partners to integrate platforms and services into MFAM’s ecosystem.
You will engage directly with investment professionals, operations staff, and leadership to understand their challenges, translate them into technical solutions, ensuring those solutions create lasting value. As a member of the team, you will have opportunities to grow, develop, and create meaningful value and lasting impact through the Mastercard Foundation.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
This is a unique opportunity to be a foundational contributor within a world-class organization that will have global impact. You will be the primary owner of MFAM’s internal analytics stack day-to-day; bringing vendor solutions to life through configuration and integration, managing data flows, supporting end users, and embedding AI-assisted workflows within the firm’s broader AI program. You will also partner with other teams to maintain and optimize features across our existing systems. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working directly with business stakeholders, gets energized by turning rough ideas into practical analytical solutions, and wants to operate at the intersection of technology and investment management. You will leverage cloud-based and modern tooling to deliver scalable, well-architected solutions to MFAM.
Accountabilities include:
- Build, integrate and maintain MFAM’s suite of internal applications — primarily Python-based tools and dashboards that serve the investment and operations teams. Own the full lifecycle: requirements gathering, design, build, deploy, and iterate, working within MFAM’s access control, data handling, and information security standards.
- Configure, maintain, and optimize our Snowflake environment — schemas, access controls, data pipelines, data models, and query performance. Design and build new databases and data architectures as required. Ensure data integrity, auditability, and reliability across all internal systems, including adherence to data classification, retention, and access governance standards set at the program level.
- Maintain and enhance data sharing connections, data engineering pipelines, and data quality checks to ensure data integrated into Snowflake from other systems is accurate, timely, and ready to power self-serve analytics and other downstream processes.
- Serve as the data subject matter expert for extraction, transformation, and downstream analytics from our enterprise and investment platforms; partnering with the IT team, who owns in-platform configuration, user access, and workflow, to ensure data flows cleanly into Snowflake and into purpose-built analytics that extend those platforms.
- Implement, integrate, and support AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, MS Co-pilot, coding assistants) across the team in support of the firm’s enterprise AI program — building workflow automations, integration patterns, and hands-on examples that bring the program’s priorities to life. Operate within the AI governance framework established by the CTO and use AI as a force multiplier in your own development work. Program strategy and championing sit with the CTO and the Head, Data & AI; your role is to make the program real in the tools and workflows of the team.
- Partner directly with investment team, operations team, and leadership to understand opportunities, pain points and priorities. Translate business requirements into concrete technical specifications and deliverables. Help maintain the feature request pipeline and manage delivery. Prioritization and strategic direction are set by the Head, Data & AI; this role owns feasibility, sequencing, and delivery execution.
- Apply contemporary data techniques, architectures, and AI solutions to support scalable analytics, streamlined operations, and a data-driven culture across MFAM.
- Own data quality, documentation, and auditability as a core responsibility across the data and analytics stack. Establish and maintain standards for schema design, naming, lineage, and data contracts as the platform grows and downstream consumption expands.
- Engage with external vendors, data providers, and delivery partners where additional build capacity is needed — reviewing their work, integrating their outputs, and ensuring quality and consistency with internal standards.
- Cultivate relationships with peers at similar firms, industry practitioners, and thought leaders — participating in conferences, forums, and working groups — to broaden perspective on how data and analytics are being applied across the industry and to bring fresh thinking into MFAM’s approach.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- 3–5 years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or software development, ideally within financial services or investment management
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field
- Proficiency in Python and experience building internal tools and applications that real users depend on (dashboards, data pipelines, workflow apps)
- Strong data engineering fundamentals — you understand how to model data, build pipelines, and maintain data quality
- SQL fluency — complex queries, performance optimization, and schema design
- Familiarity with financial data — portfolios, performance reporting, risk analytics, fund structures — and comfort working within the vocabulary of asset management
- Strong business acumen with the ability to sit with technical and non-technical stakeholders, understand what they’re really asking for, and translate that into a technical plan that leads to collaboration and delivery
- Intellectual curiosity — you pick up new tools, APIs, and concepts quickly because you genuinely enjoy learning
- A mindset oriented toward doing things the right way — you’d rather build a proper foundation than ship a quick fix that creates technical debt
- Sound judgment on handling sensitive data, investment information, counterparty data, Foundation-related material; and comfort working within and supporting enterprise access controls and information security standards
- Enthusiasm for being a key player in a start-up environment, embracing hands-on execution, contributing beyond assigned responsibilities, and adapting to evolving roles and expectations.
- Alignment with the mission and values of MFAM and the Mastercard Foundation.
SKILLS
- Experience with cloud-based data platforms, particularly Snowflake, and familiarity with data architectures (data warehouses, ETL/ELT, orchestration processes)
- Experience with Python web frameworks such as Streamlit, FastAPI, or similar
- Exposure to analytics engineering tooling (e.g., dbt or equivalent) and modern visualization platforms (e.g., Power BI, Sigma, Tableau, Plotly or similar) is an asset; specific stack TBD and the successful candidate will help shape it
- Comfort working with APIs — REST, authentication flows, and data integration patterns
- Experience with version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows
- Hands-on experience with AI/LLM tools (coding assistants, LLM APIs, prompt design) and a demonstrated track record of using them to enhance productivity and build automations
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP) is an asset
- Background in or exposure to alternative investments, fund administration, or asset management operations is an asset
This is an on-site role, with a requirement to work from our Toronto office 4 days per week.
